Did you know that International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8 March? It is the perfect important day to express your appreciation to all women worldwide and to highlight someone in your life and surprise them with a gift in celebration of this official holiday.

How did International Women's Day originate?

International Women's Day originated in the struggle for women's rights and equal opportunities. It started as a feminist movement at the beginning of the 20th century, when women from different backgrounds worldwide started demonstrations and started standing up for their women's suffrage, equal employment rights and freedom. It was celebrated for the first time by the United Nations in 1975.

In the following years, International Women's Day spread to all countries, with women from different cultures and backgrounds coming together to show solidarity and fight for their rights. Today, International Women's Day has been declared an official holiday on March 8th that is celebrated with feasts, lectures, marches and other activities that honour women's achievements and draw attention to the ongoing struggle for gender equality.

Why is International Women's Day on 8 March?

On 8 March 1908, protests were held in New York by women's organisations against poor working conditions, low wages and the lack of voting rights. This strike became a crucial turning point in the history of the women's movement in the United States. A year later, International Women's Day was officially proposed in Copenhagen at the International Women's Conference. Here, it was proposed to the government to dedicate a specific day each year to celebrate women's achievements. The proposal was received with enthusiasm by political parties and in the following years, the idea of International Women's day spread around the world, bringing women and men together to fight for equal rights, voting and labour rights?

Since then, 8 March has become a symbolic day of solidarity and action, when people around the world come together to celebrate the progress made in gender equality, agreements, and to draw attention to the challenges that remain. Ultimately, this date came as a symbol of strength, resilience and determination of women around the world. It reminds us that the struggle for unity continues and that we continue to work together to build a world where women and girls have the freedom, opportunities and respect they deserve.
